35.狮子和雕像 (The Lion and the Statue) iconsound

yī gè rén hé shī zǐ tǎo lùn shuí gèng qiáng dà ,

一个人和狮子讨论谁更强大,

A Man and a Lion were discussing the relative strength of men and lions in general.  

zhè gè rén hé tā de péng yǒu rèn wèi tā men bǐ shī zǐ qiáng zhuàng shì yīn wéi tā men yǒu gēng gāo de zhì huì 。

这个人和他的朋友认为他们比狮子强壮是因为他们有更高的智慧。

The Man contended that he and his fellows were stronger than lions by reason of their greater intelligence.

tā duì shī zǐ shuō : “ gēn wǒ lái , wǒ zhèng míng gěi nǐ kàn 。”

他对狮子说:“跟我来,我证明给你看。”

"Come now with me," he cried, "and I will soon prove that I am right."  

yú shì dài shī zǐ dào yī gè huā yuán ér ,

于是带狮子到一个花园儿,

So he took him into the public gardens

ràng tā kàn jù rén dà lì shì de diāo xiàng ,

让它看巨人大力士的雕像,

and showed him a statue of Hercules overcoming

dà lì shì céng jīng bǎ shī zǐ de  kǒu bāi wéi liǎng bàn ér 。

大力士曾经把狮子的口掰为两半儿。

the Lion and tearing his mouth in two.

shī zǐ shuō: “ dí què , shì bù cuò yɑ ,

狮子说:“的确,是不错呀,

"That is all very well," said the Lion,

dàn zhè bìng bù néng zhèng míng shén me ,

但这并不能证明什么,

"but proves nothing,

yīn wéi zhè gè sù xiàng shì rén zuò de” 。 

因为这个塑像是人做的”。

for it was a man who made the statue."

wǒ men cháng cháng yǐ xiǎng xiàng hé xū gòu chū lái de dōng xī yǐ wéi shì zhēn shí de 。

我们常常以想像和虚构出来的东西以为是真实的。

We can easily represent things as we wish them to be.
